The Fishing: Saltwater species
Bonefish - Bonefish are plentiful throughout the year in the salt. Weather you are on the ocean or fishing the flats, you are sure to have some solid chances at hooking and landing a Bonefish. Bonefish tend to be in large schools; however, there are plenty of singles and doubles if you are interested in more challenging casting. Bonefish in the mangroves and on the flats flats are not as plentiful, but are typically larger.
Permit You can expect plenty of shots at 10-20 lb. permit with some fish in the 30-40 lb. class. Turneffe permit may give you more shots than many other destinations, but they are just as challenging to catch!
Tarpon Like most saltwater species, Tarpon can be sought after by many anglers exclusively. They are migratory so make sure you let us know if this is the species you are looking to catch. We can taylor your saltwater trip to exclusively persue giant or baby Tarpon. The tarpon migration is generally from late April through September, although there are some resident tarpon around throughout the year. Most tarpon jumped are 60-90 lbs. with some big fish of 150 lbs. or more.
Other species Barracuda, black snapper, sharks, jacks, mutton snapper, jack crevalle. Sounds like a lot... it is. In fact, anglers have caught as many as 16 different species on a fly rod during their weeks stay at Turneffe Flats.
